A copy of Mr Phillip Livingston's picture in bl[ack] lead

Object Status:

Unlocated

Accession Date:

March 1779

Primary Source Reference:

Du Simitière Memorandum Books, Library of Congress, fol. 42r

Notes:

Philip Livingston (1716-1778) was an American merchant and statesman from New York City and a Signer of the Declaration of Independence. He died on 12 June 1778, so this entry is presumably for a copy Du Simitière made of sketch he had previously made from life. It is on Du Simitière's list of "Paintings and Drawings done" and was possibly used as the basis of a later engraving by John Francis Eugene Prud'homme (1800-1892), which is inscribed as having been engraved "from a Pencil Sketch" (pictured here).
