"Found in Georgia, whose pouches on each side of its head, are on the outside of its mouth, the inside of them covered with short hair; this pouch intirely on the out side of the mouth differs totally from the description of the Hamster of Europe. This Animal is vulgarly called the Salamander; perhaps because it burrows in the hot sand-hills of that State."
Notes:
In the southeastern United States, salamander is the local term for the pocket gopher (Geomys pineta).
