"This is the appearance of it in walking, but on the approach of Danger, it contracts its extremities, by which its quills are erected in every direction, and it is then secure from the attack of other Animals. They are natives of Europe and not of North America."

A hedgehog is a spiny mammal of the subfamily Erinaceinae, in the eulipotyphlan family Erinaceidae. There are seventeen species of hedgehog in five genera found throughout parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa, and in New Zealand by introduction. The European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) is pictured here.
On 15 Aug 1806 Thomas Hall of London donated a hedgehog.
