Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 36th Lecture (ca. 1799): "No. 1820. Ruby crowned wren. on the top of the head is a spot of a Ruby-red colour, not bordered with black as in the golden crested wren. The general plumage the same. Motacilla calendula Linn. Roitelet rubis Buff. These beautiful little wrens are most commonly found among the low shrubbery. They visit us in the spring & fall."
