Coral tree is a collective term for the approximately 130 species of Erythrina, a genus of flowering plants in the pea family, Fabaceae, that grows in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Erythrina lysistemon is pictured here.

In 1788 Peale painted a double portrait of Baltimore merchant Benjamin Laming (ca. 1750-1792) and his wife Eleanor Ridgely Laming (ca.1760-1829) (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Object no.1966.10.1)
