Notes:

William Samuel Cardell (1780-1828) was a Bennington merchant who operated a marble quarry and factory. He was also an author and teacher. He later moved to New York City, where he founded the American Academy of Language and Belles Lettres. (Jefferson Papers, Retirement Series, 15: 422-423)
