Notes:

Gerardus Troost (1776-1850), a Dutch-American medical doctor, naturalist, mineralogist, and founding member and first president of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, published the first account of the Raritan amber in "A Discovery of a Variety of Amber, and of a Fossil Substance Supposed to the Nest of an Insect," American Journal of Science, and the Arts, 3 (1821): 8-15 / https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/30964981 . In April 1821 Troost was appointed professor of mineralogy of the Peale Museum.
