Accession Date:

November 6, 1806

Notes:

This collection of limestone rock (calcite) may have come from what is now known as Butler Cave-Breathing Cave, in Bath Co., Va., which became a National Natural Landmark in 1973. It includes two major cave systems that contain a 40-foot waterfall, a natural bridge, unusually fine "floating" crystalline formations, and an underground lake. Madison Cave is near the town of Grottoes, Va.
