Notes:

An amphibole is any of a large group of minerals, not a specific one. The group was so named by Haüy in allusion to the protean variety, in composition and appearance, assumed by its minerals.The name was used by Haüy to include tremolite, actinolite, and hornblende. This term has since been applied to the whole group.

René Just Haüy (1743-1822) was a French priest and mineralogist, commonly styled the Abbé Haüy after he was made an honorary canon of Notre Dame.
