Peale's Museum acquired several works by Edward Simmons Lewis: on November 12, 1808 this map of Delaware drawn at the age of six and two small landscapes drawn at the age of six; on November 19, 1808, four maps drawn at the age of twelve.
All drawings were the gift of Edward's father Samuel Lewis (ca. 1757-1822), himself an artist and the donor of other items to the Museum. He worked at the "Plantation Office" (the Board of Trade and Plantations) in London in the 1770s and was in America by 1780.
