"And they are made of the Pod of the Bittle [betel?] Nut when green. Carved with a large Knife about 18 inches in length 1-1/2 wide & a 1/4" thick, the one Ornamented with silver &c is not Common, the ornaments are made by the Natives -- the green pieces forming the leaves are the shell of an insect called by them Guiao."

The donor John Garcia Verdugo is described as being "of Spain."
