Lewis Kunitz, listed in Robinson's Philadelphia Directory for 1817 as "cupping, bleed. & leech," was one of the Philadelphia volunteers who went to Norfolk, Va. during the yellow fever epidenic of 1855. See Report of the Philadelphia Relief Committee, Appointed to Collect Funds for the Sufferers by Yellow Fever, at Norfolk and Portsmouth, Va., 1855 (Philadelphia, 1856), p. 15. He was a Mason and in 1825 was convicted of larceny.
