Simon Willard, Jr. (1795-1874) was only about fifteen years old at the time of this donation and had just entered his father's (1753-1848) shop to help make clocks.

There is no mention of tides or mills in John Ware Willard, A History of Simon Willard, Inventor and Clockmaker (1911).
