Charles Kinsey was a partner in a paper mill in Paterson, N.J. His patented papermaking machine used a cylinder mechanism similar to those patented by Thomas Gilpin in 1816 and John Ames in 1822. It was built by the Philadelphia papermaker and mouldmaker Daniel Sawn. The paper mill was abandoned when Kinsey's partners converted the mill to cotton manufacture during the War of 1812.
