Simon Willard, Jr. received a patent for his washing machine on 25 Apr 1807; Charles Willson Peale provided a lengthy description and illustration of how it worked in a letter to John Isaac Hawkins of 17 May 1807, concluding "My family are at this moment using this washing Machine; the second time of tryal and the Girls approve of it."
