On 29 Oct 1807 Zebulon Montgomery Pike (1779-1813), who was leading an expedition to explore the southwest to the fringes of the northern Spanish-colonial settlements of New Mexico and Texas, sent to Thomas Jefferson the bow and arrows, which "are the Offensive weapons of the Appachè’s, a nation of Savages who formerly extended from the entrance of the Rio del Norte, on the Atlantic to the Gulf of California." Jefferson acknowledged reciept of the shipment on 5 Nov 1807, when he told Pike that he would forward the items (as well as two grizzly bears that Pike had previously shipped) to Charles Willson Peale.
