A lady's work bag, of Prince William Sound, South Seas

Object Status:

Unlocated

Accession Date:

May 30, 1794

Primary Source Reference:

Dunlap's American Daily Advertiser (Philadelphia), 30 May 1794

Additional Source Text:

"It is made of bark and ornamented with feathers."

Notes:

James Cook entered the sound, in the Gulf of Alaska, during his third and final voyage in 1778. He named it Sandwich Sound and later that year it was renamed Prince William Sound. A sound by that name in the South Pacific has not been identified. Peale's confusion may have arisen because on that (fatal) voyage Cook's ship Resolution sailed through both the North and South Pacific.
