Object Status:

Extant

Accession Date:

May 4, 1814

Primary Source Reference:

Peale Museum Accessions Book, Historical Society of Pennsylvania, p. 73

Notes:

Commodore Jacob Jones (1768-1850), who commanded the USS Wasp, captured HMS Frolic in an engagement in the West Indies on 18 Oct 1812, but the Wasp and its prize were then captured by HMS Poictiers and Jones and his men taken prisoner. They were exchanged, and much celebrated on their return to America. Jones received a gold medal from Congress and from his native Delaware "an elegant sword and piece of silver plate with appropriate engravings." The silver tureen from which the Peale Museum's cast was presumably made is pictured here. See John Thomas Scharf, History of Delaware, 1609-1888, 2 vols. (Philadelphia, 1888), 1: 285.
