Notes:
Poulson's American Daily Advertiser of 9 Apr 1801 carried a lengthy article describing a fish "that was washed on shore in a storm, in the Gulph of Genoa. . . Its head alone was equal to three times his body, something resembling a tadpole; hence it hath been called the frog-fish and rana-pis-catrix." Rana piscatice is what the Italians call the monkfish (Lophius piscatorius.
