Notes:

This object may have been "a profile in black lead of G[enera]l Horatio Gates form of a medal" drawn by Pierre Eugène Du Simitière in Mar 1777. Such a drawing was sent to Paris, where it was engraved with thirteen other profile portraits and published in 1781 in Collection des Portraits des Généraux, Ministres & Magistrats qui se sont rendus célèbres dans la Révolution des Treize Etats-Unis de l'Amerique Septentrionale, plate 6. Du Simitière retained copies of some of the fourteen profiles, which he described as "done in black lead form of a medal for my collection," and may have retained one of Gates. The print from the drawing sent to Paris is pictured here. Du Simitière Memorandum Books, fol. 7r, Library of Congress
