About 1825 Anne Newport Royall saw Chinese hats in the Museum and reported: "The Chinese hats are plaited of cane, and different in size. One of those in the museum was two feet in the brim; those worn by the females are extremely small, and seem to be plaited of fine grass -- they are in shape like a tunnel [funnel?]."
