Notes:

John Beale Bordley (1727-1804) was a Maryland planter and judge. He was a close friend of Peale who raised the funds in 1766 to send the young artist to London to train under Benjamin West's tutelage. This donation reflects Bordley's interest in experimenting with new agricultural products, such as silk grass that was sometimes cultivated for its fiber.
