Notes:

The mud snake (Farancia abacura), endemic to the southeastern United States, is also called the horned snake because it has a sharp point on the end of its tail.

The donor was Araminta Alexander (1773-1854) of Somerset, Md. Her father, Loyalist Robert Alexander (1740-1805), a former delegate to Congress, was declared a traitor and his lands confiscated, except for a small portion set aside for his wife and children, who remained in Maryland.
