Thomas Gilpin (1776-1853) and his brother Joshua (1765-1841) established Delaware's first paper mill near Wilmington in 1787. In 1817, Thomas invented and patented the first continuous papermaking machine in the U.S., based on information secured by his brother in England. After suffering reverses, they sold the mill in 1837. Thomas was later the author of Exiles In Virginia: With Observations On the Conduct of the Society of Friends During the Revolutionary War, Comprising the Official Papers of the Government Relating to That Period, 1777-1778 (1848) and other works.
