Notes:
Du Simitière apparently had fifteen of the twenty-six plates by various engravers after Pietro da Cortona's (1596–1669) frescoes for the palace of Grand Duke Ferdinand II of Tuscany (Pitti Palace), in Venice, which were published as Heroicae Virtutes Imagines quas eques (Florence, ca. 1677). The plates show a suite of ceiling decorations made in 1641-1647. The scheme, devised by Francesco Rondinelli, shows the ideal ruler at various stages of his life (each stage governed by a presiding planet). A representative plate is pictured here.
