The donor, Stephen Payne Adye (ca. 1740-1794), was a captain (later a brevet-major) of the Royal Artillery who served in North America. He was the author of Treatise on Courts-Martial, to which is added an Essay on Military Punishments and Rewards (New York, 1769).
