This bronze medal is one of 74 in the Galerie Métallique des Grand Hommes du siècle de Louis XIV (Celebrated Men of the Reign of Louis XIV) by Jean Dassier (1676-1763), Chief Engraver at the Genovese mint, issued in 1723-1724. There are two main types of designs for the reverse – both have a monument and either a reclining figure or two putti. Each medal is 28mm diameter.

Pierre Bayle (1647-1706) was a French philosopher, author, and lexicographer.

The donor was Capt. John Montresor (1736-1799), a British military engineer and cartographer in North America. He gave Du Simitière a "collection of medals of Small bronze, the work of Jean Dassier of Geneva."
