"At the plantation late Dr John Kearsley's 4 miles from Philada on the right hand of the Frankfort road was plought out of a field the largest Stone hatchet I ever saw, very intire and well finished it was found in May 1775 and given me by the owner for my collection" (MB, 78v).

Notes:

The donor was John Kearsley (ca. 1684-1772), a Philadelphia physician, architect, and astronomer. Born in England, he came to America in 1711 and settled in Philadelphia in 1717. He designed, financed, and built Christ Church, was a member of the Pennsylvania Assembly, and trained many Philadelphia physicians, including his nephew and namesake John Kearsley (d. 1777).
