Notes:

A sequin is a gold coin of a type minted by the Republic of Venice and elsewhere, and until the 19th century used widely in trade and commerce throughout Europe, the eastern Mediterranean, and further afield. Du Simitière may have had a medal that he called a sequin minted in Venice, pictured here, that commemorated the life of Fra Mauro ("Frater Maurus" in the inscription) (ca. 1400-1464), an Italian cartographer who lived in the Republic of Venice and created the most detailed and accurate map of the world up until that time. The medal was created shortly after his death; the image here is from the title page of Placido Zurla, Il mappamondo di Fra Mauro Camaldolese (Venice, 1806).
