Samuel Higley (1687-1737) of Simsbury (now East Granby), Conn., mined copper and minted copper coins in 1737 and 1739. Pictured here is a 1737 Higley Copper.

The donor, Thomas Mifflin (1744-1800), was an American merchant, soldier, and politician from Philadelphia. He was the first Governor of Pennsylvania (1790 to 1799).
